I think I'm going to put this on my calendar for next year. Too much going on this year (getting MWF tranferred; looking at houses; maybe moving), but next year is a definite possibility.

My outlining so far is limited to a few notes in a 3x5 notebook I carry with me all the time--nothing formal, just things I didn't want to forget, like the awesome name that came to me out of the blue for the antagonist. I've done a teeny bit of research and will do a bit more before 11/1, but Baty recommends no more than one week, maximum, to research. That and the two 'magna cartas' he recommends will be it for me.

So you bought a copy of Baty's book then? I'm also leaving the 'weekly' chapters until just before the corresponding week, except I haven't even looked at them yet: gotta have some mystery to look forward to!

In terms of outlining, I have a few thousand words of notes, characters, and plot points. It's the only way I can keep my story in my head, by umm, not keeping it in my head at all.

Since it is 7 days before 11/1, I've started the research/planning phase.

I've found the backdrop for the novel and, while reading Googled articles on it, I discovered some potential plot points and potential scenes. And some potential names for characters (always the hardest thing for me). Can't wait to start fleshing out Charleigh, Rhyl, et al.

Good stuff, Joyce. The excitement is building, isn't it?

I'm cheating a little by the rules of Baty's book as I've been planning this novel for the last few months, and have already attempted and partially scrapped a 5000 word beginning. I say partially because I'll most probably re-use some of the ideas, and certainly the MC.

Names for this novel have been a lot of fun. I dug into a book of police photos from 1910-1948 Sydney to come up with authentic Australian names, which are pretty much from England. Walter Fitch, Mick Riley, Reggie Cooper, and many more.

This is going to be fun!
