Linda,

There are rumors of a detective's slot opening up in my outfit.  Main problem is that it's in St. Louis, and Katy doesn't want to move from Chicago, which would mean a long commute.

Here in Chicago, except for two specialists (one narc assigned to a DEA Task Force, and one counter-terrorism expert assigned to the local JTTF) who aren't really part of the department, AMTRAK doesn't have detectives.  We have a lower order of plainclothes officer called  "investigator."  The difference is still not clear to me except that investigators don't get paid nearly as well.

Me, I'd love to be either a detective or an investigator, but, even if the position opens up, I don't know how likely it is that I'd get the promotion, with barely a year's seniority.

And, at this point, it's only a rumor anyway.

Anyway, best of luck.  I think you'd make a hell of a detective.  And remember, though you may miss Patrol, novels about detectives sell better than novels about beat cops.

Thanks Jim,

St. Louis would be one HECK of a long commute.  Too bad they don't have any openings in your area.  How is it you're down to a year's seniority?  You've been a cop in Chicago a lot longer than that, is AMTRAK a new assignment for you?

Thanks for the good wishes.  This statement cracked me up, "And remember, though you may miss Patrol, novels about detectives sell better than novels about beat cops."  Though I truly love patrol, I have to admit that we do all the work and get credit for nothing.   ::)

I read about our last big arrest in the paper.  Apparently, my arrested persons magically appeared in the detective's offices with all the evidence in tow.   Not a single mention of any of the patrol officers involved.  We had nothing to do with gathering witnesses, evidence, hunting them down, chasing them, fighting them, cuffing them, reading them their rights, or getting incrimatory statements from them.  It's what we usually expect in the papers, but at least they usually mention the word officers, such as, " . . . was arrested by officers.  Detective So and So stated . . . "

But you gotta love patrol.  It has to be the most interesting and rewarding job in the world.  And it's just as well the papers don't mention our names because, as I'm sure you know, a low profile is best.

I'm reading!  Thanks,

Linda

Linda,

Up until a year ago, I was working for a very small department in the North Suburbs.  In September of 2007, I got new job with the AMTRAK Police.  My grandfather, the first member of my family to go into law enforcement, at least in this country, was a railroad cop, too, so it seemed right.

Hasn't been everything I hoped it would be, but it's been steady.  and the commute's a lot easier than the schlep to practically the Wisconsin line was.

I had this site as home page for a while. Then I had to erase the drive and lost my way getting back. A newbie though, when it was up, and  I saw very little activity. Perhaps it was the time of the year - my (Southern) Summer, your winter.

Just chanced on it again today and happy to return. Though with NaNo in a few days, I'll probably be away a lot - bu t I'll be sure to come back as often as possible.
