a website question
« on: December 14, 2006, 02:44:53 PM »

Not quite sure where this belongs so will post here.

I am thinking of posting chapters from the novels on the website.  My publisher can provide me with printed pages, or I can use typescript from my files.  I'm wondering about appeal vs. readability.  What are your feelings on this matter.  (I have a short story up in typescript).

Thanks,

Ingrid

By "printed pages" do you mean a pdf file? I'd be inclined to think the tech people at your publisher won't steer you wrong on this and I'dtake their files.

Just an opinion.

Ingrid,

I'm sure what you mean - "post chapters of your books"

Perhaps post part of the first chapter of each book. This may encourage readers to purchase your books.

Hi Ingrid,

Lots of folks with websites offer electronic versions of promotional materials
for the download. It's a good way to get visitors to your site interested in
what you are offering.  I design websites for a living and have generated PDF
and/or html versions of promotional collatoral for several clients. They really like
the convenience of having their materials available for download on their sites.

If I can help you generate any PDF versions of your book chapters, please
feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to help you.

Thanks all.  Yes, I think pdf files is the way to go, since my webmaster leans that way and the publisher seems eager to help.

Now I have to pick the right chapters.  Arrgh!

Leon, I can run a whole chapter.  They range from 2-3 pages for a prologue (these are usually juicy, but violent) to 20 pages for a full chapter.  I'm already running a long short story (for a while longer, but not forever).

Whatever helps!  Just heard another newspaper is cutting back on reviews.

I think you're right to go the PDF route, Ingrid. If your webmaster
can make the PDFs for you, you might consider putting your website
URL and any other contact info (email, publisher address, etc) on
all downloaded materials. That way, you can make sure folks know
where they came from as well as marketing your web presence
for maximum effect.

Good luck with your project and let us know how it goes.
