foreign copies
« on: November 01, 2006, 05:17:43 PM »

I got copies of the French DRAGON SCROLL and the Russian RASHOMON GATE today.  Very strange to see your books in foreign languages.  I can only read the German ones, but don't.  The French one, I could stumble through. The Czech, Polish, Romanian, and Russian books are a mystery (no pun intended).  In fact, I stared at the Russian book for a while, trying to figure out if any other eastern countries used Cyrillic. I clearly had no idea what it was I had in my hand, except that the copyright page listed RASHOMON GATE in English.

I have no control over the translation (and in Germany I have some problems with what they did) or the cover design.  The French have been very good about this, but other countries just use 18th century woodblock prints which don't fit the time at all. The Russian and Czech books are hardcover but look pretty cheap.  The French is a softcover, but quite elegant.

And now that I have them, I have no use for them.  Still, it's sort of fun.

Congratulations, Ingrid!  If you can't find any better use for them, just put them on a shelf and point them out to people you want to impress.   :D  It sure impresses me just to hear about them.  It's so terrific that your books have an international audience!

Congratulations Ingrid. I think getting foreign copies would be fun. Enjoy showing them to your friends -- And what a tool to use when you give a talk. I still remember a writer who brought some foreign translated books to a lecture I attended. I was impressed.

Très sincères félicitations Ingrid,

If you need help with that French copy I can give a hand  ;)
Can't wait to have it in this side of the Atlantic... To be franc, I'd better read it in its original version. If I have time I'll read both and tell you if the translation is good.

Of course you have a use for the foreign editions, Ingrid- you put them on your bookshelf and point them out to everyone who visits.

I wish I had some foreign editions (though knitting books in English sell fairly well in Non-English-Speaking countries, so I do have some foreigh sales). I used to be able to pronounce Cyrillic (I took Russian in High School), but can't do it any more.

Thanks. Yes, really looking forward to the Hebrew. :).  The contract already contained some curious form of writing.  It looked quite sacred and mystical.
And thanks, Zara. I'm also pressed for time, or I'd go at it with the dictionary. L'ENIGME DU DRAGON TEMPETE was released earlier this month.

Ingrid, why don't you make copies of the foreign covers and frame them somehow? You could put them in your writing room. (A great writer's block reliever. But then, I somehow don't see you getting writer's block!)

Penny, I've got the American covers framed. Actually, that gets expensive.  :)
