I stumbled on to it years ago. It was one of the few websites that didn't have any annoying take forever to load graphics. I always appreciated that. And still do. I must have been one of the first, although I've had to re-up a couple of times so maybe my history doesn't show any earlier log-in names. I seem to remember that one of the first things I read was  a chapter for critique posted by Vivian Cherne. Whatever happened to her?

Kathy,
I just posted a separate thread about Vivian, trying to find someone with a good email for her. After her disappointing experience with her first publication she put down her pen and focused on work and family. Last I spoke with her, which may have been more than three years ago, she said she might someday get back to writing. I hope so.

How did I find MWF originally? You know, I have absolutely no idea. Serendipity, I think!

I did a search for mystery writer's groups and found a couple.  They turned out to be chat groups.  When I asked, if there were any serious writers there, one replied, "I'm a serious writer.  I write in my diary almost every day and I've just written a book report for English class."  I realized I was in a room with pre-teens and quickly got out.

Then I found MWF a couple of months after it started.  I've been here ever since. :)

For a while Barbara Bassett (pseudonym, derived from "Runaway Nudist") was posting occasionally on another mystery site--one with heavy commercial aspirations, but not an utterly useless one.  One day "Jane B" suggested I might enjoy Mystery Writers' Forum, so I followed her link, and quickly discovered that I'm not a skillful navigator of unfamiliar websites.  Then that "other" forum began loading itself with drop-down menus that consumed beaucoup de temps, so I gave MWF another, more vigorous, try, and it's been the only website I visit "as daily as possible" ever since.  Thanks, Jane B

Books by Byron and Kay McAllister can most easily be obtained as e-books or in print from the publisher at http://www.writewordsinc.com/ For "Undercover Nudist," the print version is an improved version of the ebook version. The others are the same in both formats.

I joined a forum for readers of Christopher Brookmyre mysteries, but got a little fed up as there wasn't (at the time) a lot of activity, so I was looking around for a more active forum and googled Mystery Writers and got put straight through to MWF. I had also just started my first WIP and had a query about tear gas that hadn't been answered properly in my other internet queries. Bob and Jim came back so promptly with exactly the info I was looking for and I was so impressed with the community atmosphere and the professionalism in the old MWF site. And considering that I was only a member of the old site for about a week before Laurie said she had to discontinue it - I was extremely relieved that Bob was able to continue the forum on this new site!

I found MWF through Cluelass a long time ago.  I used to post very rarely as Wanderland.  Then I got involved in other things for a couple/few years. I wandered back in just before Ingrid has a crisis of faith, realized who she was and how much I enjoyed her work and came out of lurk mode for a time.  Been lurking and occationally commenting ever since.

After some good old fashioned Googling, it was either rec.arts.mystery or here. So I came here. :)

It was recommended, highly recommended I might add on Kate Derie's CLUELASS site.  Kate's the associate editor at Mystery Readers Journal, and she owns and operates Deadly Serious Press (which published my book), so I checked, and continue check, her site regularly

Jim, can you ask her to update the URL for MWF on her site, if she hasn't already?

Thanks,
Jane B.

Kathie,

You may already know, but Vivian just checked into the Welcome Wagon thread, and there's also a Welcome Back Vivian thread.
