Jane Tennison

I saw an ad for this program about a month ago and it never showed in our area, but now it has finally made it. For those of you in Virginia and North Carolina, check your PBS station for tomorrow night. This particular British police procedural is excellent.
On a lighter note, Monk returns this Friday.

Thanks for the info, Ingrid. I have to tape PBS's Mystery, but will make sure I do so. And I always manage to watch Monk!

Arrgh!  All the good stuff disappears.  I'm still mourning the disappearance of Inspector Frost.  In this case, I believe the author got fed up with the lack of reader support and stopped writing.  Since is is, to my mind, still the best police procedural of all, I'm bitter.

Ingrid,

Inspector Frost hasn't disappeared, just cut back to two or three episodes a season.  The most recent one aired on Britain's ITV just exactly a week ago.

There were only five or six Frost novels by Wingfield.  The show used them up for plots long ago. The episodes have been comprised entirely of original teleplays for years now.

The problem isn't that they stopped making them.  It's that they stopped showing them on this side of the Pond.

By the way, I quite agree with you.  A Touch of Frost is a top-notch show and David Jason is a particularly believable cop.

Unfamiliar with Frost, but Monk is popular here. I like their plots so I put up with him. I find him a little annoying (which is probably the whole point).

Since we're on the topic of TV cops I just want to make another plug for The Wire--dealing with wire taps, drug and corruption busts mainly. It's in its 4th season on HBO, but the DVDs of the previous 3 are out, and it's one of the best police shows I've seen since Homicide-- Hmm? set in the same city too. Feels pretty spot on with procedure from my novice PoV, but maybe Jim or someone could comment on that.

Charles,

I haven't seen as much of The Wire as I'd like (we don't get HBO), but since the same people are behind it as were behind Homicide, I'd be inclined to think that they got the technical details right.

Well, I suppose a TV episode written for TV and featuring Frost is better than nothing -- if it makes it over here -- but it's the novels I particularly liked.

Grumble, grumble.

I saw the Jane Tennison thing last night.  Don't want to start talking about it if no one else has seen it yet.

I thought this was one of the best ones. Nice characterization, and a good wrap on the series. I liked the AA and the family at the bar scenes especially. ... Still, Tennison could always be a consulting detective down the line. Is that what they call PI's in England? I can't remember.

Just saw the second section and am feeling a bit bereft. No more Tennison. :( Extremely well done, though quite sad.

This series sounds really special.  I wonder if it can be rented in DVD.
