Japanese swords on PBS
« on: October 10, 2007, 06:39:18 AM »

Ingrid, I watched a really interesting program last night on the PBS science program NOVA, about samurai swords. It sounded like the techniques for making them might date back to your era. They showed modern-day craftsmen using those traditional methods, and material scientists explaining why those swords were so perfectly designed. (Also a lot of hokey samurai fighting, but still...)

Did you see it? If so, what did you think?

Kathy, I was alerted to the program by a friend, but skipped it. Most of what is shown about Japanese swords postdates the periods I dealt with.  But you are quite right.  They did indeed have the first breakthrough in the way they made the swords in the Heian period.  What is a bit more dubious is whether the swordsmith's guilds already existed with their attendant support guilds. When in doubt, I tend to assume they probably did in some form and are just not mentioned because all the writing from the period is either aristocratic or Buddhist. By the end of the period, the monks themselves became swordsmen and fought.

At the moment, I'm deep in the 18th century in Europe.  :)
