Just curious...
« on: January 18, 2011, 01:49:45 PM »

I realized the other day that I'm sort of out of the loop on what good mystery is out there right now. I'm mostly into hardboiled detectives in the Black Mask vein (which means I mostly read stuff that was published long before my time) Hard Case Crime is great but those guys can only do so much. So...what the hell is out there right now. Anybody find any gems that they would recommend or any authors worthy of a looksee? Hardboiled is my favorite but in truth I loves all mystery. Well...maybe not the cozies...

Anyway, thanks to anyone who has any input.

Hi and welcome to MWF

Perusing my list of books read, I'd suggest the following:
Lori Armstrong's Mercy Gunderson series
Anything by James Lee Burke or Michael Connelly
Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder series
The late Steven J. Cannell's Shane Scully series
Raymond Chandler was a master of the genre and his books (IMHO) are just as fresh today as when they were written.
James Ellroy's novels set in the 50s (very heavy on corrupt cops and politicians).
Scott Flander has two novels set in Philadelphia that have a gritty edge.
Dennis Lehane's Kenzie/Gennaro series and his Mystic River
Archer Mayor writes a great police procedural series set in Vermont
Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series.
Ridley Pearson's Lou Boldt series.
John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series.
Karin Slaughter's Sara Linton series.

Hope that's enough to get you started.

Oh, where to start?  Have you read P.D. James?  An Unsuitable Job for a Woman has got to be one of the best mysteries ever written!  Ruth Rendall's Wexford series is wonderful, tho I don't care so much for the rest of her work.  Reginald Hill is another favorite of mine, as is Thomas Perry.  Oh, yeah, and Kate Atkinson.

I truly envy anyone who hasn't read these and has them in their future!!!!!!!

Robert Crais' Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series
T. Jefferson Parker's Charlie Hood series

Both have high enough body counts to keep them interesting.

I belong to a mystery readers group. It's a Yahoo group and I get a lot of ideas on what to read there.

Recently I've read a few good ones:
Think of a Number, by John Verdon--very cleverly done
Finding Nouf, by Zoe Ferraris, set in Saudi Arabia
Dead Simple, by Peter James,-very suspenseful, darkly funny

If you haven't read all of Ian Rankin's books, I suggest you start there. He has a new one coming out soon.
