No surprises
« on: March 04, 2007, 06:24:23 PM »

Is anyone familiar with this song of Radiohead? I understand each word but can't make sense of it. I'd like to know if it's a suicidal song is the pretty house and garden a graveyard or what? Thanks for your comments. I wouldn't like to use it in the wrong way.

"No Surprises"

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal

You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

This is my final fit, my final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please (let me out of here)

I'd be inclined to say you interpreted the idea quite nicely.  If someone I knew were to express those ideas to me I'd be quite worried about them.  However given that this is a song - it could just be an exageration of someone who is tired of whatever routine their life is in.  Try this:

In the US songs that are said by the artists to be about suicide generally get very little air time, as are other forms of personal violence.  So the singer(s) will always deny that's what they meant.

I hope this helps more than confuses,

Thank you Elena,

That's exactly what I feared. Due to the double intender or controversy,  I'll find another theme song... ;)

I'd also point out that Radiohead is a pretty eclectic group. My best friend's son (17 years old) is a pretty big fan.

Their one hit was called "Creep". The chorus was:
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here...

I've listened to a little of their music. They must be the most depressed band on the planet.

Clay,

This group is really scary. When I first heard the lyrics of 'No suprises' I thought : What? Did I get that right... If their other songs are all in the same vein....  :o There are teens and fragile people listening to those things. It's dangerous !
