Title: Poking around...
Post by: jlwrites on October 04, 2006, 02:40:15 PM
...largely because that's what I was asked to do.

I'm here because I'm intrigued, and because I'm a good friend.  I'm JL, and I've known our illustrious administrator for a lot longer than he's been the admin of MWF.  I am his go-to grammar goddess and have been known to go over his WIP with intense red pixelation (he lives for this, really).  And he asked me to pop in, root around, and see what he's done with the place in the last 24 hours.  So here I am.

Mystery writing is definitely not my forte.  I can't seem to write one to save my life.  I love reading them, though, even if I lack the imagination to figure out whodunit before the story's detective reveals the truth.  I can think of once when I figured things out before I got to the end of the story, and even at that, I'd only half-figured it.

I have several WIP myself (a point of contention between Bob and I being that I haven't done anything with them in years, but that's another story), but since I can't write a mystery, they don't quite fit in here.  But at least I do write.  Sort of.

I've been married for ten years, and my kids are of the feline variety.  I'm an aunt to more kids than I'm actually related to, and have arrived at the hospital within hours of the birth of Bob's last five kids.  I work in a field that's totally unrelated to writing of any kind, except in leaving the daily log of my day...I'm a PCA in elder care.  That means I take care of senior adults.  It also means that I see Bob in his line of work more frequently than I'd like.  Oddly enough, I like what I do, and it does give me a wide variety of people from whom to play personality surgeon in order to construct characters.   :D

Feel free to say hi!

Hi JL,
Nice to meetchya!

Hi Bob,
Thanks for setting this up -- so quickly too!

Hi all!

Jeez, all the text options are terrifying for a Libra... Which smiley face should I add? ??? Will they really work? :-\ Probably not :-[

I'm too scared to even try those other buttons :o

I had a whole goofy post written and then it disappeared. But it looks like Bob wants the *playing* in the Testing thread anyway.

Welcome jl- I don't write fiction at all at the moment, so you're not the only one not writing mysteries.

Hi, JL! (Holy cats, but there are a lot of buttons right above the words I'm typing...must refrain from playing...) It's nice to have you with us. I've probably read thousands of mysteries in my life and I rarely figure out whodunnit ahead of time. More fun not to, I think -- or it that mere justification? Hmm...

Anyway, glad you're aboard!

Janet

This is going to be fun.  Two questions:
What's the "insert flash" button do?
What's "karma"?  I mean the kind over at the left of the message.

Karma is like reputation. From the SMF site:
Quote
Karma is a feature that shows the popularity of a member. Members, if allowed, can 'applaud' or 'smite' other members, which is how their popularity is calculated.
I've seen reputation-type stuff get abused on other sites, but I'm thinking we're a more mature bunch than most, so I'll leave it turned on, mainly for fun.

Oy vey!
This is scary, like an initiation to a sorority in the old days. All these buttons and icons. But it's like coming home!
Thanks loads, Bob!

Well, that finally explains the Karmas and the "applaud" and "smile" business.  It's like a popularity contest.  Ouch!  I'm in deep trouble here.

Hmm!  Don't see any place where you can get in touch with the gracious host and webmaster, so will take this route.  I've been "poking around" some more and see that you have a listing of members with info. Can you add a web site for me, please?  http://www.ijparker.com

Ingrid,
If you click on the button on top that says 'profile', it will bring up your profile where you can add your website.  Not sure anyone else can do it for you...would need your password, but perhaps Bob could in his administrator role.

I added it for you, Ingrid.

Stuff like that can be easily added to your profile. Click the "Profile" button, then go to "Forum Profile Information" on the left.

Okay.  Thanks Bob and Susan.  Still learning.  I'll be okay one of these days.
