question about storage unit practice
« on: February 23, 2009, 04:01:54 PM »

In a short story, I have the people who run storage huts deciding after four months of nonpayment that the unit has been abandoned, and the stuff should be auctioned off.  A locked box is left locked, and hence sold without opening.  Is either assumption realistic?  My co-writer noticed that I was playing fast and loose with the possibilities, so I'm wondering if anybody here has any relevant experience.  If it's a matter of law, but different from state to state, I have the option of leaving the locale unspecified, and if it's merely a matter of common practice, I might still be able to leave the story as written, but it probably isn't usable if the standards are really widespread and not as I have used them.  Does anybody happen to know?

I think 3 months is a reasonable time, and usually the auction is for the contents as is/where is, so I don't think selling a locked box is unreasonable. Might be a good jump-off point for more than just a short.

Sometimes it takes therapy to put the past behind you. Other times, it takes a 20 gallon trash bag and a couple of cinder blocks.

At one time I worked for a man who owned storage units as a side line. After three months of non-payment we were required to run a notice in the paper that the contents of the unit would be sold off if not brought current in 30 days. When nobody came to payup and claim their belongings the lock was cut off and an auction was held. Lots of the buyers were people who resale at flee-markets.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Bob and Lynette.  It looks like I can leave the "sale date" as it is.  I presume whether the box would be opened before sale might be variable. (I prefer it not to be, but if the examination can be pretty cursory, I can live with it's being opened.) Thanks again.  Byron
