I had occasion today to read "Stench," and I thoroughly enjoyed it, Jim. I think that's only the second Dan Sullivan story I've read (the other was on HandHeldCrime), but I've liked both of them.

Thanks so much for the compliment on "Stench" and on the Sullivan series.  Nicest birthday present I've gotten so far.

If you're interested, there's another Sullivan story called "Death and Taxes" here:

http://www.overmydeadbody.com/deathtaxes.htm

It's set a little later in his career, after he's out of college and working as a fed.  It's been up for several years now, but since Over My Dead Body! no longer seems to be publishing, I'm always a little surprised when I check it out and find it's still there.

When "Death and Taxes" first appeared, it earned me more than any story I'd published to that point, mainly because it was a contest winner, and it wound up winning in two different categories, thus earning me two separate cash prizes.

Another great story. I heartily recommend all of these to anyone who hasn't read them yet.

"Death and Taxes" is a fun story. I thouroughly enjoyed it - not at all surprised it won two awards - extra fun for me since i live in the area.

Thanks for the compliment.  You live in Sauk County?  One of Katy's and my favorite places.  We actually did get snowbound once at the Round-Barn Lodge (fictionalized into the Red Barn Inn in my story), one of the incidents that inspired me to write that particular story.

Incidentally, slightly fictionalizing the area into "Sac Prairie County" was a tip of the hat to August Derleth, who wrote a long series of novels (including some mysteries) about the area, called the "Sac Prairie Saga," using the same slightly fictionalized name for the area that I did.

The enclosed mall with the IRS office inside, however, isn't located in Sauk County, but just outside of Green Bay.  I simply lifted it up and planted it several counties to the west.

Next door, Dane county, but except for the IRS office all was familiar.  Thanks for clearing up the mystery of the 'beamed' over IRS office.
