Post by: Lee Lofland on July 17, 2007, 07:35:36 AM
Writers Digest Books has just released a sneak peek at my new book. Here's the link if anyone's interested.

The book is scheduled for release on August 6, but it's available now for pre-order on Amazon and all the other usual outlets.

Lee, it looks terrific.  I love the cover.  And I see you have already been booked for personal appearances.  Way to go!  Much success!

I love it, Lee! Looks like a book every mystery writer should have on their shelf.

Thanks, guys. I hope everyone finds the book interesting and fun. It's definitely not the normal research book. As I told Ingrid earlier, I spent a lot of time making sure the book was what writers had told me they wanted. I also wrote it with  CSI and Forensics Files viewers in mind.

Looks good, Lee!

BTW, I may be at Forensic U.  It's a big time commitment (pretty much sucks up all my days off that week), and I'm not very nitty-gritty oriented (CoziesRMe), but it's local for me, so it's tempting.

Forensics U (I can't bring myself to type just FU :) is going to a great event. Wait until you see what's on the schedule! I don't think there's ever been anything like this available to non-law-enforcement/scientist/medical people.

You won't be disappointed.

I hope to see you there.

If it's anything close to what you did at the Pennwriters conference they are in for a big treat! ;D

Tried to preorder your book a couple of weeks ago at Borders but they told me to wait until the end of this month.  <sigh>

Thanks, Peg, but I'm just a small fish in that big pond of heavy-hitters.

Shoot, if you wait until the end of this month to order the book you may as well wait until it's in the store. That's the 6th of August.

Of course, Peg. We'll find a way to make to happen. After all, you're my number one heckler!

Thanks Matthew and Lynette.

Lynette, I'm going to pass along your cover comment to the designer. There's a bit of history with that cover design. When the folks at Writers Digest first showed it to me I didn't like it and said so. Well, I gave it a chance and it finally grew on me, and now after I've seen it actually on a book, I really like it.  Anyway, your comment along with many others just like it will certainly show the artist that she was right (and I was wrong). She'll be pleased.

Totally enjoyed the tidbit they offered on the web site and am looking forward to holding the entire book in my hand.

Thanks for sharing it.

I can't think of a better place for it to be.   ;)

Okay, I had no clue that a scene of the crime and a crime scene could be two different things. (Can you tell that I've never watched CSI?) I don't write much about police work, but your book sounds like something I should have as a reference.

I like the cover, too!

Don't feel bad, I can't watch CSI at all because of some of the absurd things they do. Believe me, I've tried to watch and can't. I'm sure they're great entertainment in a fictional/semi-true sort of way, but that's TV. It's not meant to be reality. If it was no one would watch.

The closest I get is to help out a bit with the police/forensic details in the CSI:NY novels.

Lot's of people seem to really like the cover of the book. I wish I could take credit for it, but I can't. Writers Digest Books has some great artists/cover designers over there and I was lucky enough enough to have worked with this particular person. She also did all the sidebars and illustrations in the book as well as placing and touching up all the photos. She and my editor also selected which photos they wanted to use from the stack of nearly 1,000 I, and others, took. Poor thing had to work from some of my crude sketches, too. I think she did a great job.

I was amazed at the wonderful teamwork and the number of people it took to get this book into print. I thought I had it rough researching and writing it. Shoot, the process had only just begun when I submitted the manuscript.

I was also lucky enough to make a few trips to the publisher's office to meet the "team." It was quite fascinating to say the least. The first visit was a whirlwind tour of meeting editors, proofreaders, artisits, marketing people, Writers Digest Magazine editors, PR people, representatives for B&N and Borders, etc. I remember thinking, "Wow, all these people are working on something I wrote. Cool!"

If you ever get the opportunity to see an operation such as the one over at F&W Publications (parent company of Writers Digest Books) do yourself a favor and go.
