amazon shorts
« on: November 30, 2006, 05:45:25 PM »

It looks like one of my stories will be on AMAZON SHORTS.  I know nothing about this venue -- except that it comes with a contract that has shark's teeth in it and caused me to hesitate quite a bit. I am told (by my agent) that it will be good for publicity.  We shall see. I have few stories to bandy about but will sacrifice this one if they don't mind republishing one that is out of print. My first venture into electronic publication.

One really good thing about Amazon Shorts is that they have an infinite shelf life, just like any ebooks published. Not entirely sure how successful the Shorts are in terms of sales or publicity. Joe Konrath has an interesting and timely post on his take. He's had some stories up on Amazon shorts for a while, so you might find it worth a read.

Thanks, Daniel.  Konrath actually seems to be offering electronic versions of his books for free. I doubt this will work. People are fickle. They don't attach much value to books in the first place. And some (like me) may like to read in bed.

I had a much better idea this morning (my mind is amazing early in the morning).  Since ephemeral itrems, such as movies and music videos and games, sell like hotcakes at high prices, and since we sell few books because everybody passes them around, donates them, resells them, or even leaves them for another reader in airports, I propose that we print all paperbacks in disappearing ink and charge double the current price for hardcovers (which will have permanent ink).

Way to go, Ingrid.  I love 'disruptive' ideas.  I know yours was somewhat tongue in cheek, but I think at some point in time something like this will happen to totally change the business of books.  Whatever it is, we will all adapt and in the long run, it will be a good thing.    So much of the business today is about the business of book publishing /marketing and not enough about what the consumer/reader really wants.  Sorry to get on my futuristic bandwagon, but I love to speculate about what the future might look like and what the impact will be on all of us.  Can you envision a world where books only sell if someone wants to read them, not based on how much marketing $ are behind them.  Sort of like the YouTube of books....and we already know Google is heading there, too!

Now, technology today could actually determine who clicks on Japanese web sites as well as mystery web sites and provide you with a customized list of likely readers of Akitada mysteries.  It's not that far away in our future.  Stay tuned!  You could send them all a personal email linking to your web site and sell them an e-book or a print on demand hard copy.
