Book or Novella
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:46:09 AM »

I am in the middle of writing a short story of a new detective character of the NYPD variety and have the plot in my head. It will probably go digital rather than print because of ease of purchasing.

But I see colleagues in other genres who are going digital that are writing what they are calling book series. The Dead Man series for one created by Goldberg and Rabkin. Some of the entries in the series are as little as 90pp (note that this is no reflection on their quality as I recommend them if you like that kind of writing). The prices reflect their length but I always though a book was at least 75k and up. Am I stuck in the dark ages?

Anyone have experience in this type and would you call them books?

Thanks.

I guess I'm old fashion as I still like holding a book when reading it...but the times they are a changin'.  E-books and services are convenient and generally cheaper and sure are becoming very popular.  Will they have to stay with traditional guidelines or make their own rules?/  We'll see.  If they are priced accordingly, I guess I wouldn't mind reading a shorter book, as long as I have some idea of its length.  Personally, my stories always seem to fall into the novella range (45-60k) for some reason.

So I guess the market will probably rule as it usually does.

Good topic, Jeff.

Amazon has given the novella a rebirth. Especially for a series. In short they are back. As more people go Kindle, and various smart phone apps, audiences will get larger. Projects deemed too big for print rags, and too small by publishers may find a home if not a loyal following too. This can be very useful to new writers A) because it might help pay for an extra few gallons of gas/ month, B) it counts as part of your writing platform when approaching agents and publishers because it gives you a track record. (note one downside: this also gives you a track record, so don't put your shopping list on Amazon.) C) doing this will help with those peripheral friends and acquaintances who ask 'can I read some of your writing?' in short ease of access can increase readership and sales.  Cheers!
