Title: What ever happened to...
Post by: Dave Freas on December 09, 2006, 09:40:14 PM
...new members introducing themselves in chat?

Those of you who have joined us recently, how about posting a bit about yourselves?

Not a rant, just a question and suggestion.

I joined years and years ago, but don't recall ever posting anything specifically about myself.  Quite a bit has leaked out from time to time, however, so I don't suppose anything important is missing--unless, of course, not everybody is in agreement about what's important.

Well, Byron, Better Late Than Never!!

I know I'd love to hear more about you, and I'm probably not the only one!! (Although I'm sure it wasn't you Dave was referring to...)

Hey Dave.

Most of the recent new members are not here for the intent and purposes of mysteries and writing. In short, I think they are here for nefarious reasons.

I sorted the member list by registered date (latest) and scanned the members on the first page. Of the thirty listed, I think only eight are legitimate members. The remaining twenty-two appear to be bogus entries, possible spammers.  We have already been hit by a couple of them hawking there wares to increase our desirability to women and other such nonsense. Fortunately, I think our illustrious and ever diligent admin has been busy removing the offending entries.  Too bad we can't remove the culprits too.

Bob removes the spams? That may explain the fact that I never find these items you all seem to be talking about! All I ever see is our regulars.

Yep. I know Elena is very diligent about reporting them, and several other people have done so as well. As soon as I get that report, or I see the post, it gets moved to Post Jail, and the offending poster gets banned, permanently. I've been banning by IP range, as well, so that may help a bit. We'll see. Banned members still show up on the list, though. I think.

Thank you Bob,
I seem to be the early bird on the Forum, and sometimes find worms that are for a very different sort of bird.  For anyone who catches one of these posts, at the bottom right, to the left of 'logged' is a place to click to report to moderator - makes it easy to let Bob know.

Now all I have to do is find out what the 'logged' button does  ???

That's easy. "Logged" is not actually a button. It's just a reminder that your IP address has been logged with that post. THat is, I get the IP address of every post made.

Verrrry Interrrresting,  It would appear that my IP number is very auspicious indeed.  Perhaps I should invent IP numerology  :D

My husband has been trying to get our young neighbor to start a business doing virtual acupuncture (she's studying it in NY), but he seems to have it confused with virtual voodoo... and now that this idea has stuck in his head there is no shaking it loose.

I get the pun on "acupuncture" and "stuck" (in his head), but if there's another based on "shaking," I missed it.  Byron

Last night at the Crime Writers of Canada party I ran into Mary Keenan, who says hi to all. I know she showed up briefly here but she said she's really busy these days and hopes to get back to beam her phosphors our way again some time soon.

I've been away for a while.  Hello to all, new and old alike.

Have I missed anything important in the last couple of months?

Referring to my remark that I never got around to introducing myself, even though I've been an MWF member for "donkey's years":
Well, Byron, Better Late Than Never!!  I know I'd love to hear more about you, and I'm probably not the only one!! (Although I'm sure it wasn't you Dave was referring to...)
Penny

As to info about me, the supply greatly exceeds the demand, so that I've been reluctant to get involved in that.  However, now that I'm reminded of the request, I have a pot of information boiling, and when it boils down enough that only objects of interest are left--if there prove to be any--I've resolved to burden the waiting world with the preferably unscorched residue. If, by then, I can still find the "welcom wagon" thread, that is. Watch that space, all ye not easily bored.

There wasn't one that I am aware of.  I pun by accident, especially when I am tired.  I generally don't catch them.  The people around me find this tendency amusing, especially those who are into puns....

What's a Sagittarian??

Clueless Penny.

PS Also, could someone please explain "Bollywood" to me? It's in the media all the time, even here, but I managed to somehow miss it.

You are not clueless obviously your mind is concerned with higher things.

A Sagittarian is someone who is born under the star sign Sagittarius. Which is one of 12 symbols that make up the Astrological Calendar. I'm an Aquarian, my star sign is Aquarius.

As for Bollywood it is the colloquial term for Indian Cinema. American movies are all associated with Hollywood but Indian Films are largely made in Bombay so some 'smart alec' put the words Bombay and Hollywood  together and came up with Bollywood. A term Indian filmmakers themselves have adopted.

Hope this helps

Michele
