Where Is Everyone?
« on: September 05, 2007, 11:59:40 PM »

Hey, guys, the holiday weekend is over.  Where are you all?

Has there ever been this many days without a single message?

It is awfully quiet isn't it?

I cut five chapters from my book that were not working for me and am now regrouping. Scary thing to do, but better than wasting my time on something that wasn't good enough.

;D That's my excuse for not being in here...what are some of the others?

Holiday weekend is over, but some parts of the country are just getting into school.  It's already been going a month here, so that can't be my excuse.  I have been sending queries to agents with this last book I've finished, so I've been polishing that, and trying to do more marketing of the ones that are already published (NOT my talent!).  I check in to see what's going on, but don't comment too often, on the Biblical principle in Proverbs 17:28:  "Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise..." :)

Good luck with your regrouping, Peg!

Working to midpoint of a new historical thriller (18th c. Europe), nursing a dachshund with disk problems, and cursing the absence of more reviews for ISLAND OF EXILES.

(who just responded to an e-mail from someone who wanted to use my 9,000 word short story "Akitada's First Case" in a literary celebration with readings . . . if I could cut it to 3,000 words.  I declined).

I'm preparing for my few remaining conferences of the year, tending to our very sick dog (I feel for you, Ingrid), completing the final touches on a novel, and just today I signed a contract to write a kid's book.

Hey Peg, do you really expect us to believe that you've been quiet? No way I'm falling for that!  ;D

When it comes to Peg, quiet is a relative term.

Me?  I've been writing, reading, and--oh yeah--doing this thing called earning a living.  My wife has a real obsession about paying bills like the mortgage.  And my employer insists I do actually show up and really do work on a regular basis.

I began teaching again.

This time I got 2 classes of third graders, very sweet little girls, who know absolutely NO English. I also got one class of  (slightly too) spirited fourth graders, who know a bit more, but who now need to learn the basics of reading...

I don't teach many hours, but I still need to prepare a lot.

As for my writing:  (Painful for me to share:) I just got back two rejections for a collection of children's short stories, some of which are mysteries. It turns out there is no market here for children's shorts. I'm not sorry I wrote them, because I didn't know how to write shorts, and really wanted to give it a try. I was told some of the stories are really good, so at least I'm not sinking too low. Maybe I'd like to pick one and turn it into a novel? (I've been asked.) But I don't know. I am working on a new children's mystery, not a short story.

The only other publisher I know of here who is willing to see the stories is the one who'd published my first book a few years ago. I recently heard he published a second edition of it, without telling me! The problem is, I can't make head or tails of the contract to see if I hadn't signed something stupid. This isn't about monet - small change, that's it. But the principle.

Well, enough rambling!

Lee, big congrats on the contract, but very sorry about the pup.  Hope he/she improves soon.

Penny, I can't even get my agent to submit a short story collection.  There's no market for it here.

Thanks, Ingrid. She's very sick and no one seems to be able to figure out the problem.

I hope your pup gets better soon, Lee. Yours too, Ingrid. It's so hard to see those souls suffering like that.

Thanks, Penny.  Maggie is sufficiently better that I can't keep her from using the stairs -- which is of course bad for her.

Lee, could it be some sort of poison she picked up outside? I assume the vet checked that. Some rodent controls affect the kidneys.  And then there is the whole business with contaminated treats from China at Walmart.  Hang in there.  It may yet be okay.

They've checked for all that kind of stuff. No poison. She never goes outside without one of us anyway. We've also been through insect-type diseases, cancer, kidneys, pancreas, liver, xrays, heart, ultrasounds, blood pressure, etc. It all started suddenly a couple of weeks ago. One minute she was fine and within an hour she could barely walk. The lymph nodes in her throat swelled to the size of golf balls. She became very lethargic, stopped eating, etc. The odd thing is that her right front leg seems to be injured. Oh, and her vision has reduced dramatically.

She's seen all sorts of specialists, including an orthopedic surgeon, interrnal medicine, etc. No one has the slightest idea what's wrong. Every test has come back negative. Antibiotics have worked on the infection that caused the swollen lymph nodes and she is starting to eat a little. But she's still very, very ill.

By the way, she's a toy poodle named Pebbles.

Poor little girl.  Antibiotics!  Well done. Keep it up.  There clearly is an infection.

Sorry to hear about Pebbles, Lee. I hope they can find out what her problem is and will be able to reverse it soon. Our pets are so much a part of our family.

As for my absence, I've been busy promoting my new book. In fact,  this morning I'm headed to Charlotte for a couple of library functions. (It's a shame that a writer's job turns into more than just writing the book.) I'm also 50 pages into the third book in the series, so what time I'm not running around I'm writing.
