Title: Who are we missing?
Post by: Jay Hartzler on October 14, 2006, 05:38:22 PM
Who of our little community has not yet signed in? I hate to have someone miss jumping ship. Do we need to contact them and let them know we moved? Where do we to get a bunch of change of address cards from the post office?

Off the top of my head, I know Scott Summit has not checked in, but we've corresponded, and he's having computer issues. Sarah Weinman also has not.

Who are the title/name geniuses who aren't here?

Lauri told me at one point she thought there were about 200 or so regulars, and we've only got 67 actual members registered here (I have 3 logins), so we're missing quite a few.

If you go to the old site, and click "More" on the menu bar, then click "Search Users," you can browse through the list and see what names are familiar, and which of those aren't here yet. This link should take you direct to the User List (http://www.zott.com:8080/users).

Edit: fixed URL

Oh, I'm so happy you,ve been in touch with scOtt, Bob. I contacted him to RE joining, so I hope it works out.

Someone else I contacted is Matthew Shoonover, but I haven't heard from him yet.

Penny,

I talk with Matt on a regular basis off site.  I know he has been having some computer problems and may well be waiting to get registered over her until he has them under control.  Or, on the other hand -- He is also loyal as good hunting dog and may just be holding on over there out of respect until the close the doors.

Later,

Joe

A Matthew S. is already registered here.  I don't know for sure that it's Matthew of the excellent titles, but assumed so.

In case you haven't seen it, the "info center" at the bottom of the home page has a list of members registered.

Is Byron in by now?  And what about Sarah?  She may be too busy to visit very often.

Being something of a cyber-klutz, I don't know how difficult this would be, but on other sites I've visited that have changed locations in the interim between visits, there was a link posted at the discontinued site leading to the new site.  Could something like that be rigged up so that people trying to log on at zott.com could be directed to ravensbeak.com?

Jim,

Bob said on the old site :
Lauri and I have agreed that I will take over MWF. I'm working with my hosting provider to move MWF to the same server my blog is on.

Tentative plans are for it to move to mwf.ravensbeak.com. The mysterywritersforum.com domain will stay alive, and point to mwf.ravensbeak.com much like how it now points to www.zott.com:8080/~4.

I'll be running a different software package, but only because my hosting provider has a couple of free ones.

Priceless Advice and Bookmarc will be saved and moved, as will the list of links at http://www.mysterywritersforum.com/links.htm. I'm not sure about other posts; it may be more effort than it's worth to move them over. We'll see.

Other than it looking a little different, I don't anticipate any major changes. As Lauri said, the people here are what make the community, not the software or how it looks.

We've got a whole month to get things switched over, so keep an eye on this thread for updates. It'll probably be at least a week before anything at the new site is set up.

Zara,

Re your question:

"Is that what you're looking for???"

Not exactly.  I'm talking about if someone, like me, went directly to zott.com, instead of through mysterywritersforum.com, they'd ind a notice saying "MWF has moved," and a link to the new location.

Jim,

I guess Bob is the only one who could answer. But I think the link will be forwarded at the end of this month; when the site closes. I sort of remember somewhere in 'chat' a thread : 'MWF will survive' that when you'll click on MWF you'll land here.
But hey, maybe I was lost in translation (litterally ;) ) let's wait for Bob's answer...

I'm here!  Wouldn't miss it for anything!

A lot of the registered ones back on the old site have been among the missing for some time, I suspect.

I just checked the old site and it had one message. It was Jo Rockhill. She said she couldn't link to this site. Maybe somebody could give her a suggestion. All I know to do is click on the link to this site that Bob originally posted.

What about Maire? Has she signed in? Has anyone contacted her if she hasn't?

Bob,

Lynette beat me to it, but I said I'd see if there was anything you could do to help Jo Rockhill.

I've emailed Jo, and will try to get her in.

What is Maire's last name?

never mind, I think Maire checked in, I finally figured out where to go to see the "members". I'm just very slow learning this site. I should keep my big mouth shut until I have it all figured out.  :-[ :-X

Don't feel bad. I'm the admin, and I didn't even think to check the members list here. I was trying to find her at the old site.  ???

Oh, and yes, she's registered here. (http://mwf.ravensbeak.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=69)

To loose no one on the road, would it be workable to do a mass mailling to all members listed in mwf (Zott version)?  ???

I notified Maire, Jen Wright, Karen Irving, and Jane B. as soon as I read Lauri's first message. Maire and Jane B. have both made it. I'm not sure about Jen and Karen, but at least they have the link.

Zara,

Thanks VERY much for this list.

I know Jane Berman is here (Jane B). I've emailed Sarah Wienman, and she's aware of the change. Don't know if she'll join us here or not. Scott Summitt will join us as soon as his computer issues get worked out.

If anyone wants to email these folks from their Zott account, that's wonderful.

Zara, if you don't mind, I'll update this list as I'm aware of changes, and you should be able to as well. Just use the "strikethrough" button on the name.

Bob,

When I cross checked the memberlist, I noticed some very active people in the past. If their e-mail address is still available and working, wouldn't it be an occasion to get them back on board? There were some 'frequent lurkers too' . I copied and pasted their profiles on my computer, just in case....

I'm in the process of sending out some emails to people.

Lauri and Joe were able to scrounge up a total of 380 names from the database. I know that's not everyone. For example, Lee Lofland wasn't in that list, nor was Zara.

I tried to scrub out the folks who have already registered here; if you get the email, I apologize.

I am hopeful that we'll pick up some more folks soon.

I sent a special notice out to the MWF Homeless members with the new link, so I guess they'll come in when they can or email me if they can't. Jo Rockhill was one of them. Actually, 67 sounds about right for active members. Remember, that member list includes anyone who registered and visited even once, and people who had trouble logging in and had to re-register, so lots of duplicates. I thought maybe the old URL would have a link to the new one, but I guess it can't. Wonder what happens if you do a web search for Mystery Writers Forum. I'll try it out and let you know. Oh, I guess I should go visit the old alternate Delphi forum and see if anyone lost tried there.

Okay, a Yahoo search brought up the old site. Bob, I think you or Lauri could contact Yahoo and get that URL changed. I also checked at the Delphi forum, and nobody has posted there. I posted a message about the change in case anyone does try there. I also contacted one of the Mystery websites and asked them to change the MWF link url there. Don't know if they'll do it. Anybody else know of other general mystery and mystery writing sites where MWF was listed as a link?

Jane B., thanks for the reminder!  I need to change it on my website.  Mine's not, by any stretch of the imagination, a major website, but every little bit might help.  Good grief!  You'd think I would have thought of changing it before now, but no.  :-\  ::)

Has Steven Torres made it in yet? Saw him at Cape Fear last weekend and he said he'd tried the old site, but couldn't get in. I told him about this one. He said he would try to log on or email Jim for instructions.

Steven Torres (http://mwf.ravensbeak.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=70) has made it. Otis and Sarah have not, although I've emailed both of them, and Sarah has replied, thanking me for the information.

I've emailed Bryon Quertermous as well, but not Rickards.

I encourage everyone to email folks you know are missing, and spread the link around as well. You can use http://mwf.ravensbeak.com or
