North Carolina Writers Police Academy
« on: September 09, 2009, 09:34:00 PM »

I'm pleased to announce that the 2010 Writers Police Academy will be held on September 24, 25, and 26, in Jamestown, N.C. at the Guilford Technical Community College and Public Safety Training Academy (just outside Greensboro). The facility is a fully functional police and fire training academy. We'll have access to the same equipment and training as the police and fire recruits. In fact, we'll be using actual police cars and fire trucks for part of our training. There's even a fully operational fire station on site.

This event is designed to offer writers the opportunity to see and handle actual police and fire equipment, smell the odors associated with burning buildings, hear the clang of closing cell doors, ride in police cars and ambulances, handcuff bad guys, gather crime scene evidence, solve a homicide, and much more.

The Academy website along with registration and hotel details will be available within two weeks. Space will be limited so please register early. This is a one of a kind event where you'll receive hands-on training like you've never experienced before.

All instructors are all experts in their fields. We'll also have a surprise guest or two.

Here's a sample of potential workshops (subject to change depending upon instructor availability):

- Crime scene reconstruction (crime scenes on site)

- Accident reconstruction (driver's training course on site)

- Jail cell searches (actual jail cells on site)

- Defensive tactics and use of force

- Crime lab (you'll be superglue-fuming fingerprints in the lab)

- Impression evidence (you’ll take actual impressions of footprints, etc.)

- Search warrant entries

- Firehouse tour (there’s a fully functional fire station on site)

- FATS training using a real Firearms Training Simulator (You'll be facing armed suspects in shoot/don't shoot scenarios. You'd better be quick on the draw, and accurate!)

- Arson investigation (burn training building on site)

- Homicide investigation

- Kinesics

..and the list goes on and on.

A few more details are on my blog today.

Lynette. I plan to call on you for some much needed assistance and guidance! We're trying to arrange a planning meeting within the next two weeks. I hope you can make it. I'll be in touch.

The event is really growing fast.
