Portal System
« on: June 04, 2011, 03:10:58 PM »

As I've mentioned in a couple of posts, TinyPortal is no longer supported, and the latest version of the forum software breaks several functions of TinyPortal, so it's got to go. I know when I rolled it out, not everyone was thrilled with the idea. In general, I like it, but if I'm the only one, then there's not much point in keeping it. This isn't my forum, it's yours.

I will probably hold off on installing any new portal system until SMF finishes their rollout of 2.0. That upgrade will break several of the plugins until the plugin authors get their stuff updated.

If you eyes glaze over during technical stuff, move on now. :)

SMF is currently at 1.1.13 AND 2.0 Release Candidate 5. That means there are basically two branches of SMF under development right now. SMF 2.0 has been in development for a couple of years now, amidst legal issues, and it's annoying the daylights out of, to be honest. I've considered a couple of times pulling the plug on SMF and switching to something else. We'll see.

Sometimes it takes therapy to put the past behind you. Other times, it takes a 20 gallon trash bag and a couple of cinder blocks.

I'm not sure exactly what a portal system is, so rather than stick my foot in my mouth, I'll say "Bob, whatever you feel is the best way to go is fine with me."

The portal system is what changes the front page at http://mwf.ravensbeak.com/forum/index.php into the space with all the boxes and such, and adds the sidebar on the left side.
