Thanks for the heads up!

It's the old tale of 'heads they win - tails we lose'.

I went through several months of argument with a textbook publisher that tried to change my current contract to something similar.  Had to get an attorney and go to court to stop them from publishing the next edition until all was resolved.  Considering that they had already taken orders and promised  delivery of the new edition was enough to cause them to back down but it wasn't fun.

Simon & Schuster argue that with POD publishing technology they can keep an author's work available forever.  The problem is that the author loses his right to switch to a publisher who will promote his book better.  POD publication generally does not come with publicity or book store placement.

It is, however, up to the author/agent to accept or refuse those conditions.  One wonders how S&S will get authors to sign.
