Two-Punch Fight Injuries
« on: June 04, 2009, 07:42:18 PM »

My main character (Scott), who knows some about street fighting, but is way out of practice, gets goaded into punching a guy. Scott gets one punch in, off-balance, with his left hand (he's right-handed). He ends up breaking Donnie's (the other guy) nose, or at least bloodying it badly.

I want Scott injured somehow, so the fight ends up as a wash. How likely is he to have broken, say, his pinky in such a situation? I've seen kids with broken fingers get a regular plaster cast, but I've also seen the aluminum splints with tape. Anyone here have knowledge about which treatment gets used when?

Also, are broken noses typical from a straight-on punch, or more of a sidewards punch? They still do the tape across the bridge of the nose?

Sometimes it takes therapy to put the past behind you. Other times, it takes a 20 gallon trash bag and a couple of cinder blocks.

I'd think a straight on punch would have a better chance of breaking the other guy's nose.  And I think Scott would more likely break his middle (most likely, IMHO) or his ring finger than his pinky, since if you throw a punch, even off-balance, you aim the center off your fist at the target.  Scott, being a bit of a street fighter, would know this and do it instinctively.

I haven't seen a cast finger in years.  Doesn't mean they don't do it, just means I haven't seen it.  So, I'd go with the aluminum split.  And, yes, they still tape across the bridge of the nose, but now they use a plastic thingie (a nose splint?) under the tape.

Hope this helps.

A co-worker who in his youth had been a boxer was talked into demonstrating a punch. He broke his middle finger, and it really hurt. He tried stoic, but there was definitely some leakage around his eyes. It didn't help that the bit of wall he used for the demo had a stud behind it. I shall say nothing more  ;D

PS They did wrap it in plaster cloth with a aluminum splint, and for the first week his arm was in a sling. For protection against further onslaughts to the finger.

Thanks both of you.

I did a little more research after I posted, and there's something called a "boxer's fracture," that is apparently pretty typical for brawlers more than boxers, so it makes sense for someone who knows how to street-fight, but hasn't in a while.

That linked site is pretty nice in general.

http://www.med.mun.ca/anatomyts/radioanat/radiology/ken/boxer.htm is a link to an x-ray, if anyone is interested.
