Online Banking in 2004
« on: July 18, 2009, 04:30:03 PM »

Does anyone have any recollection of what kind of online banking services were available in 2004? I'm assuming a balance check would have been simple enough to do.

I've got my characters checking the balances of several bank and brokerage accounts in October 2004. Pretty sure it's reasonable, but I wanted a reality check.

Sometimes it takes therapy to put the past behind you. Other times, it takes a 20 gallon trash bag and a couple of cinder blocks.

It is reasonable - though online banking services became more universal in this country until 2006 when federal mandated security to protect transmissions went into effect.  The relationship is indirect - what the problem was for smaller institutions was the overhead involved in setting up a "safe" system. So, as long as your characters are dealing with reasonably good size banks and brokerages it shouldn't cause any head shaking.

Oh yeah I remember because my account got so screwed up it took me a year to get it right! They had it so you could pay your credit card on line and transfer funds. They encouraged this by charging here if you actually went to their ATM! You could transfer money between accounts also if you had more than one checking account.

I just looked back in my records and in September 2003 I moved and changed banks. I began paying my bills online at this time and have never had a problem. I changed banks in 2005 and again in 2009 because of another move. I'm having to move again in August of this year (Just moved in January). No I don't like moving, sometimes it's a necessity. (My son-in-law tells everyone when I get bored, I move.) And, no, I don't have to change banks this time.
