It talks about the difficulty of making sure that text messages are really gone from your phone, even after you delete them, and mentions a company that does forensic work on cell phones, as well.

I guess I just assumed that the service provider (telephone company) would have a record of all text messages buried somewhere in the archives and that the police could request or subpoena records.

We are continuously being warned at work not to put anything in emails and even the instant messages that we wouldn't want to see on the front page of the newspaper because the information is stored and accessible if required in lawsuits.
