Love Is Murder Conference?
CathyJ:
Has anybody attended Love Is Murder in Chicago in prior years? I'm considering it, but can't decide. It is kind of a long drive in the winter, so that may be enough to put me off it, but it does sound intriguing.

JIM DOHERTY:
Cathy,
I've been the last two years. It's a good conference, small enough that you have a chance to get intimate with attendees. In recent years, they also allow aspiring writers to pitch their stuff to editors and agents.
Of course, I live in Chicago, so it's no big deal for me to go.
This year, if you need a tie-breaker, the Midwest Chapter of MWA is merging its annual mystery writing symposium "Of Dark & Stormy Nights" with LIM. This means that there will probably be a "professional/craft" track paralleling the various "fun" tracks at the convention. OD&SN has been described by many of its attendees as one of the best values for aspiring writers needing tips on craft and professional issues. In the past, OD&SN has also offered manuscript critiques for an extra fee. Since the track will be spread over three days instead of crammed into one, you could conceivably attend every one of the craft/professional lectures, something you couldn't do back when all the lectures were scheduled during a single day. I might be giving my regular "Research for the Police Procedural" lecture this year.
Whether or not I give a lecture, I'll almost certainly be there, if that's any inducement.
CathyJ:
Thanks a lot, Jim.
I went to OD&SN several years ago, and then my writing got kind of lost in the shuffle and I wasn't doing much with it. OD&SN was a good conference the year I went.
I am not sure I want to drive in Chicago. I have never done so, and if I come on a Friday, my chauffeur (DH) probably can't get away. I am also not sure about doing a 5-hour drive each way in the winter.
But it really does sound like a good conference, so we'll see. I probably should decide soon, since early registration is cheaper.
Cathy
JIM DOHERTY:
Cath,
Where are you coming from? Maybe you could take the train or some other alternate means of transportation.
CathyJ:
I'd be coming from St. Louis. Yeah, alternate transportation is worth looking into. Because we almost always do car trips, I don't ever think about other options, unless it's someplace really far away. Thanks for the idea! I will check Amtrak.
Cathy
