I get notified every time someone joins the forum. I typically check the registration IP addresses and emails against a couple of spammer databases, and then ban the users if they show up on those databases more than a couple of times.

We get perhaps 3-5 registrations a day, so all that manual checking was getting tedious. I found a plugin for SMF called "Stop Spammer" which automatically checks every registration for me, then shows me the suspect registrations. I can approve or reject all of them with 2 clicks; it's very handy.

I also get told how many spammers have been blocked. Since I installed that plugin 2 weeks ago, it's blocked 400 spam registrations as of today.

Assuming the makers of the software didn't build in a "make us look good" subprogram, that's pretty impressive.  Is that anything like the numbers you were getting before you installed it?

I think the actual numbers are about the same. It's just that dealing with them is a lot easier now. Before it was select-copy-paste the IP address and user email to Google and StopForumSpam. Now the plugin does that for me, and holds suspect registrations. I've never really counted the spam registrations before though.

You guys have been doing a great job catching the ones that slipped through in the past; this should make it harder for them to slip through.
