MIxing of Poison
« on: December 20, 2009, 12:33:26 PM »

I'm working on a story where someone with botanical knowledge put spotted water hemlock roots through a juicer and creates a highly toxic liquid, which she uses to kill her husband.

My question is: Could this toxic liquid be put into an alcoholic drink? Would the victim taste it? The victim is a large man so the wife will need to put at least a half-teaspoon into his drink for the effects to be immediate and lasting.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've done some research but little exists about this except that farmers and cattlemen are warned that the plant is highly toxic to cattle. Spotted water hemlock also is reported to have the scent of parsnips or freshly cut carrots.

What kink of drink can mask or enhance the taste/smell of parsnips?

Someplace I've seen a recipe for parsnip wine.  I assume you're writing fiction, right? So if parsnip wine doesn't taste like spotted whatever you said, who's to write in and complain?  Surely not somebody who consumed quantities of both.

A nice spicy Bloody Mary ought to cover the taste. Try cutting a carrot and/or parsnip and sniff - see what you think.
