trade jargon
« on: October 07, 2006, 05:44:10 PM »

Hello there,

Would anyone enlighten me on what you'd call an agent hidding in plain clothes (or in disguise) in a public place in wait for a suspect. I guess undercover wouldn't do?? :-\

Thanks in advance

Caro,

In my way of thinking -- which is non expert eather (far from it) -- I'd say undercover applies to a longer period of time. (insert the smiley for major doubt)

I still would have thought that "undercover" was the right word (based on my extensive knowledge of tv cops of the '70s). Maybe we need to know more about the scenario...

Okay, here is the situation. My MC thinks his agency (an antiterrorist cell) is infiltraded by an evil sect. To be sure he sets an appointment with his contact. He arrives two hours early and watches 'undercover' fellow agents setting a trap for him.

And here is the piece:
"A middle height bearded man in a grey power suit and black winter coat sauntered in the rendezvous bar. He passed undercover agents without so much as a look, gave the room a circular check, searching the crowd then took a seat close to the entrance."

What do you think? Do I use Undercover :-\ ???

Zara,

Based on your description below:

"Okay, here is the situation. My MC thinks his agency (an antiterrorist cell) is infiltraded by an evil sect. To be sure he sets an appointment with his contact. He arrives two hours early and watches 'undercover' fellow agents setting a trap for him."

It sounds like your MC's ongoing asignment is undercover.  The particular activity he's engaged in might be more specifically referred to as a "stakeout" or, in some departments, a "plant."

If he's out in the open, in some kind of disguise, he'd also be undercover as well as on a stakeout.  If he's just hiding, he'd probably describe what he's doing as just a stakeout.

Just for fun... "they were in plainclothes"... is another way of doing it.  I was in many operations where we wore what was being worn in the environment we were expected to blend in to... and we called it "plainclothes" assignments.    If we were "undercover" that usually referred to something more covert and more specialized.  just for fun... a different perspective...
