What is investigated
« on: March 20, 2011, 08:05:49 PM »

Just read a mystery and the solution of the case ended up hinging on the detective finding out where
knowing where the suspect worked. But the way it was written, the detectives suspected one man for half the book
and never asked where the man worked, nor did they have anyone look into it.
So finally, about 90% of the way through the connection was made. This didn't hit me right.
In real life, aren't suspects be investigated at least to the point where their occupation, etc. were checked out?

Hey, Mickey.

Of course, not having read the story, it sounds like the author wanted to use the suspect's employment as a twist.  Perhaps for the first suspect it may have been unimportant BUT any good investigator would do a complete background on a suspect and then use whatever information the investigation required.  Actually, I think it would be very unusual to NOT know where a suspect worked in an actual investigation...it would surely come up along the way.

But out of curiosity...did it make you feel cheated that the author used it that way?

Yes I felt cheated. But mostly just amazed that the author would think I'd believe
this major detail would be overlooked.
