A Question of Chemistry
« on: October 20, 2009, 12:24:29 AM »

I am working on a locked-room mystery where the victim was found burned, but I don't want to use gasoline or kerosene.  Does anybody know of a flamable chemical that reacts with oxygen?  I know magnesium phosphorous does.  But I'm looking for something more than just a flash.  Any help given to steer me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Alcohol, though you'll have to furnish some suitable details.  Just dropping a cigarette into spilled whiskey doesn't seem like the way to go, but you have a lot more options.

Books by Byron and Kay McAllister can most easily be obtained as e-books or in print from the publisher at http://www.writewordsinc.com/ For "Undercover Nudist," the print version is an improved version of the ebook version. The others are the same in both formats.

Any volatile solvent will do.

As long as you have oxygen and an ignition source (match, lighter, candle) you can get fire.
