I just read Penny Margaret's thread about Red Herrings, and was reminded of a small 10 year old boy I taught.
He was absent from school a few days. Turns out his grandmother's house had been broken into and he was the culprit: practicing break-ins. He had been arrested. I don't kow if his family was in the business, but part of the gossip was that they were, and allowed him to be caught and arrested so he'd know that part of it, too. Apparently they knew it was him and called the cops to accomplish that goal.) I don't have any problem believing that children are schooled in the arts early on, after working that area.

Thank you, Ella, for the information. Yes, following some helpful advice here, I did decide to make the seven year old the culprit. She "just" takes some small change and stuff which she believes (for various reasons which I must establish well enough in the story) that people would let her have anyway. I hope this makes sense...
