Why Crime Novelists Don't Get Women
« on: April 15, 2010, 03:19:58 PM »

An article by Christopher Rice for The Daily Beast.

Quote
Most women in crime novels and thrillers are such terrible clichés, says novelist Christopher Rice. He identifies the four most common and ridiculous ones—and says writers should stop being so lazy.

He's spot on with all four of the cliches, I think, and points out that they'll probably look familiar, since "the line between prime-time crime and published thrillers is more fluid than ever."

What bothers me and not mentioned is the familiar scene where the female detective puts on makeup or 6 inch heels for a dinner date. Why is it always necessary to "soften" up a hard female protagonist?

"And while I admit, I may have included some of them in my previous work, rest assured, I'm doing my best to keep them at bay from here on out." quoteth Christopher Rice.

So if they were good enough to make him a popular writer, what is so wrong with these characters?  Obviously, the reading public isn't as concerned as he apparently is.  I personally think the guy has issues.  Is this what happens when you get some best-sellers under your belt...it's okay to take indescriminate potshots.

Sorry...I don't know why this article struck me as self-serving.  Guess I better get back on my meds and go play nice with the rest of the senior citizens.

I can see your points but I am also completely fed up with shallow female characters.  I can see the makeup scene because most women realize that their appearance can be a useful tool.

Thanks for the article suggestion,
